A Clean Desktop Simple, understandable icons allow you
to access common desktop functions. One click brings up your
Personal Files, the Network Browser, the Trash and My Linux
System. Desktop/LX presents you with a clean slate on which to work. A simple and familiar layout will help you start working right away. Desktop/LX uses drag and drop, so linking to and working from the desktop is a breeze. From the gallery of Organic Light Photography, the Signature Series provides beauty, peace and vibrance to your desktop experience. Familiar All your drives and printers are available in a familiar way inside My Linux System. You can eject CD-ROMs, format floppy disks, check the space left on your drives, and even convert a full audio CD to digital music all with a single right click. Easy Access to All Your Data Everytime you boot Desktop/LX or if you add a USB device, My Linux System automatically detects new supported drives. You can also use the Rescan Hardware link in the left pane to list new devices. Simple Your Network at a Glance Traditionally Linux® and Windows® have had their own methods for networking computers. While they have worked together fairly well, they have never been seamlessly integrated or easy to maneuver together. The Desktop/LX Network BrowserTM application helps bridge the gap between Microsoft® and Linux® networking by letting you access network resources by browsing to them, similarly to the way Microsoft's® Network Neighborhood works. You can right click to share files, map network shares and connect as a given user, giving you full control over network file access. Personal When you need to find files, it's nice to have a single place to start. The Personal Files folder gives you a place to put your music, pictures, Internet downloads and whatever else you save for the future. Your Personal Files folder is the default place for storing files while using programs in Desktop/LX. Recycle Your deleted files are stored in the trash until you are truly ready to bid them farewell. You'll never accidentally delete an important file, because it stays in the trash until you are sure you no longer need it. A simple right click empties the trash at your convenience. are available in the panel and quick lauch icons make starting
often used applications convenient. Clicking on the Window
List shows you a list of current applications to bring forward. The Clock and Dock reside at the right side of the Panel. The Dock is where docked application icons tell you that their services are available. For example, the calendar icon lets you know the Organizer alarms are on and clicking it brings up that program. The Clock gives you access to the date and time to copy and paste into applications if you wish. Logout and Lock Screen buttons are also available for easy access to those functions. Right When you right click on the Desktop/LX desktop, a utility menu appears that lets you change the background, create a new file, logout and much more. It's features like these that make Desktop/LX an easy to use environment to get the most out of your personal computer. Launch The Flower menu is the starting point for launching all your Desktop/LX applications. Plain, simple categories and menu entries make finding the programs you need easy. Recent Applications Desktop/LX holds the last few applications you have used at the top of the Flower Menu for easy access. This saves you time when working on a project that requires the same programs. Productive Desktop/LX includes a light office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation maker. To manage your personal information and schedule, Desktop/LX also includes an addressbook and personal organizer so you can start being productive from the moment you first login. Connected Desktop/LX includes a web browser, email client and more to help you get the most out of the Internet. More Connectivity Many sub menus in the Flower Menu have more advanced applications tucked neatly away inside an Advanced sub menu. The Advanced Internet Menu has programs for instant messaging and Internet relay chat. Entertaining In today's world, digital entertainment comes in many forms. Desktop/LX includes programs to listen to digital music, watch digital video, watch television, play CDs, and more. More Multimedia Desktop/LX allows you to control the mixing volumes, record sound and play midi files using a supported sound card. In short, the Music and Movies Menu lets you immerse yourself into audio and video with one click. Creative Today's personal computers are creativity powerhouses. Desktop/LX allows you to use supported digital cameras and scanners to bring your digital art to life. More Graphics Tools Desktop/LX includes the GIMP, a Photoshop® like image manipulation program for altering, touching up and preparing your digital pictures. Play Having fun yet? Manage The System Management Menu makes managing your Desktop/LX system easy. Updating and installing software and launching the Control Center can be done from this convenient place. Desktop/LX always gives you a few different ways to launch an application. That's part of what makes Desktop/LX work your way. Advanced Tasks You can perform advanced system tasks such as managing files as the Administrator or keeping an eye on specific processes directly from the extended System Menu. Configure All of your Desktop/LX configuration needs are available in one place. The Control Center presents you with simple icons to add printers, install software, configure your network and more. Video and Monitor Desktop/LX makes it easy to adjust your video settings. Adding a new monitor or changing your resolution is a snap. When you choose advanced settings, all video and monitor configuration options are displayed. Printers & Other Hardware Adding new printers and configuring drivers is now easier with Desktop/LX. You can configure your sound card, midi devices, mixer volumes and Desktop/LX sounds from the Sound and Multimedia control screen. Advanced Settings The power and control you have over your Desktop/LX system extends to the boot loader, rescue disks, and critial file backup as well. You can take a known working configuration, save it and use it in the event that you make configuration chages that render your system unusable. The Mozilla web browser is the center piece of the Desktop/LX Internet application suite. It supports tabbed browsing, bookmarks, plugins and is fully Netscape 6 compatible. Ride the Waves Mozilla can edit html pages with the built in HTML Editor and save them directly to the web. It supports Javascript and Cascading Style Sheets to give you a smooth ride on the information highway. Mozilla includes an email client that supports both POP3 and IMAP4 so you can get your messages the way you want. Mozilla Email supports HTML email, multiple levels of folders and filtering. You can use filters to take action on mail containing specific words, subjects or senders. Find What You Are Looking For Mozilla Email also includes powerful searching capabilities to help you find messages fast. You can search specific folders by sender, date, subject and more. Macromedia Flash® Desktop/LX comes pre-loaded for viewing websites with Macromedia Flash®. You can view electronic greeting cards and high end websites with ease. Audio Visual The world of digital entertainment grows everyday. With Desktop/LX you can join the digital music and video revolution. Plenty of Formats Desktop/LX can play MP3, Ogg Vorbis, WAV, CD Audio digital music files. Plus many MPEG encoded video format as well as some AVI video codecs are supported. Listen Desktop/LX comes with a CD player for listening to audio CDs as well as a multiformat player for playing MP3s, Ogg Vorbis and more. A playlist editor keeps all your songs arranged how you like them. Visualization plugins add a festival of light that moves with the rhythm. Internet Enhanced If your Desktop/LX system is connected to the Internet, the CD player will attempt to pull the artist, albumn and song from an internet CD database. The Volume Mixer allows you to mute channels, adjust levels, and select your input source for complete audio control. Create With a supported CD-R or CD-RW drive, your Desktop/LX PC becomes a CD-ROM creation station. You can make compilation CDs from playlists of your favorite songs or burn multiple albums worth of digital music onto one CD for archiving. Backup and Save You can also backup your directories and files on CD for archival storage or exchange large files with friends. It allows you to create multipage slide shows for display or export to the web. You control the moving text, graphics and drawing elements to lead your audience through every step of your idea. Your Personal Organizer Need to get your life in order? KOrganizer can help. Desktop/LX includes this wonderful tool to track your time, to do tasks, meetings, and notes. You can email perspective meeting members and set recurring events with any interval. KOrganizer supports alarms to remind you of upcoming appointments and keep you on track. The Address Book Keep in contact with friends, co-workers and business associates using the included KAddressbook. Desktop/LX makes storing names, email addresses and phone numbers a snap. You can even import information from other sources or lists that were exported from another addressbook. Easy Need more software? Desktop/LX makes it easy to install new titles from CD-ROM, floppy, or using Iris, the Internet software installer. You can list and uninstall packages as well using a graphical tool named KPackage. The Software Gallery With Desktop/LX connected to the Internet, you always have simple access to new software in the Software Gallery. Programs are grouped by types like the Flower Menu and can be installed with a few clicks. You can also find software using the Keyword Search for quick and targeted results. Iris Iris stands for Internet Rapid Installer for Software. When you click on a package in the Software Gallery, Iris takes over and asks for the system password to continue the installation. Once you give the proper password your software is installed immediately. Iris uses your Lycoris Product ID to grant access to files and make sure you get the right packages for your Desktop/LX system everytime. Listing and Uninstalling You can easily check the software you have installed in Desktop/LX with a program named KPackage. To uninstall a program, you simply select it and click Uninstall. Convenient Keeping Desktop/LX up to date is easy with the Desktop/LX Update Wizard. It makes grabbing security updates or Desktop/LX operating system enhancements simple and fast. Automatically Connect Desktop/LX automatically finds a list of available Update Servers to retrieve packages from. Download Packages The Update Wizard downloads a Package List and compares the available updates to your current Desktop/LX system. If updated packages are available, then they are displayed for confirmation and download. Update System Once the Desktop/LX Update Wizard has finished downloading all the necessary packages, the installation of the new packages begins. Upon completetion Desktop/LX notifies you and you can resume using Desktop/LX. Although a reboot is not required, and major updates to Desktop/LX Services will not take effect until the next reboot. Supportive Desktop/LX takes care of you if you have a problem or need help. In situations where system configuration errors have made it difficult or impossible to boot your Desktop/LX system, Recovery Mode offers a safe haven for setting things right. You can also have another Desktop/LX user give you hands on assistance using Desktop Sharing. If you need remote support from Lycoris, Remote Assistance enables Lycoris Support Engineers to use the Internet over a secure channel to diagnose and fix problems quickly and easily. Recovery Mode In the event that you have made system configuration errors or cannot access your desktop, Desktop/LX has a Recovery Mode. When you hold down the CTRL key during boot, Desktop/LX enters Recovery Mode and presents you with 4 choices. You can either configure the video settings or boot into a low resolution desktop to make any necessary system adjustments. Desktop Sharing Desktop/LX includes a new feature to allow a friend or co-worker to remotely control your desktop and help you from another Desktop/LX computer. With one click, Desktop Sharing is engaged and other users can connect to your shared desktop session using the Desktop/LX Desktop Viewer. A message will appear confirming that you give them permission to control your desktop. This useful feature allows you get help from any other Desktop/LX user over the Internet or a local area network. Remote Assistance If you have purchased Remote Support from Lycoris, you can take advantage of this exciting technology with a single click and allow Lycoris Support Engineers to diagnose and fix problems securely over the Internet. When you launch the Remote Assistance aplication, it tells you whether Remote Assistance is ON or OFF. If you turn Remote Assistance on, then the Internet address of your computer will be displayed for you to give to a Lycoris Support Engineer. |
